Athens was established as the Modern Greek capital in 1834 and is known for its many contributions to ancient history. The city has been inhabited since the Neolithic Era and is generally regarded as the cradle of Western Civilization. Athens reached the peak of its power in the 5th century B.C. when it became a pioneer in endeavors such as theater, art, philosophy, science, and architecture. Even in the wake on conquest, Athens remained of paramount importance and was continually revered for its prestige. In modern times, Athens has developed into a modern metropolitan center that attracts tourists from all over the world eager to take in the 6.000 years history present in this city.
